MAYOR NUTTER ANNOUNCES RETURNING TO LEARNING PARTNERSHIP

City of Philadelphia employees to receive 25% college tuition discount

Philadelphia, August 3, 2010 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced the Returning to Learning Partnership, a 25% tuition discount program that will be offered to City of Philadelphia employees who wish to pursue their postsecondary education goals. Through the Returning to Learning Partnership, the City of Philadelphia partnered with Chestnut Hill College, Community College of Philadelphia, Peirce College, Philadelphia University and Rosemont College to provide City employees with a 25% discount on tuition. Widener University will also soon join the partnership which is free of cost to the City.

“I hope City employees who have considered going to college or returning to complete the required academic credits for earning their degree will consider this program as a pathway for reaching their goals,” said Mayor Nutter. “As one of the largest employers in Philadelphia, it’s important that we support our employees to reach their postsecondary education goals in a cost-effective way during these tough economic times. I ask other employers and education institutions in the Philadelphia region to join us in this effort. Our respective businesses and the city as a whole will benefit for years to come.”

The Mayor has committed to doubling the number of residents with a four-year college degree to 36% by 2018. Currently, the college attainment rate is 21% and there are approximately 73,000 “comebackers”- residents who have earned some college credits but have yet to complete their degree program’s requirements. All participating colleges and universities in the Returning to Learning Partnership are part of Graduate! Philadelphia, which provides free guidance and support to adults who are considering returning to college to complete the required credits to earn their degree.

Chestnut Hill College, Community College of Philadelphia, Peirce College, Philadelphia University and Rosemont College will participate in the Returning to Learning College Fair on August 10, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Municipal Services Building. The fair, hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Education, PhillyGoes2College and Graduate! Philadelphia is open to the general public and will include representatives from approximately 20 colleges to provide information on two and four-year degree programs.
