Philadelphia, February 8, 2011- Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a leading worldwide research-based pharmaceutical company with Philadelphia operations, that they will consolidate their operations and move their Philadelphia corporate headquarters to The Navy Yard Corporate Center. GSK has signed a 15.5 year lease for a new, 205,000 square foot, LEED Platinum certified building to be developed by Liberty Property Trust and Synterra Partners. GSK will move all employees currently based at the One and Three Franklin Plaza Buildings in Center City to the Navy Yard property beginning in the fourth quarter of 2012.
“Philadelphia is a Smart City, Smart Choice for businesses. Premier corporations like GlaxoSmithKline recognize that Philadelphia offers educational, infrastructure and cultural assets that make our city a prime location for business. The Navy Yard Corporate Center is an attractive location where we not only provide businesses with the opportunity to grow, but we actively support it,” said Mayor Nutter. “I would like to thank Deirdre Connelly and everyone at GlaxoSmithKline for working with the city and Liberty Property Trust to create a new, state-of-the-art facility in Philadelphia.”
Throughout this week, Mayor Nutter will host a series of jobs-related economic opportunity events throughout the city to announce the development or expansion of businesses in Philadelphia. Also on Tuesday, the Mayor will attend the groundbreaking of 600 North Broad Street, a mixed-use venue that will create 39,000 square feet of new, commercial space with confirmed tenants including Philadelphia’s premier restaurateurs and event venue operators: Stephen Starr, Marc Vetri and Joe Volpe of Cescaphe Ballroom and Cooperage. Later this week, the Mayor will announce the expansion of Urban Outfitters’ headquarters at The Navy Yard, which will bring 1,000 permanent jobs to the city over the next three years.
“We are delighted to continue our proud Philadelphia history, which dates back to 1830, and to offer our employees an exciting and collaborative new work space,” said Deirdre Connelly, President of GlaxoSmithKline North America Pharmaceuticals, herself a Philadelphia resident. “This facility, with its environmentally friendly and efficient design, aligns with our global commitment to work smartly and operate as a green company.”
