MAYOR NUTTER SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER ESTABLISHING THE OFFICE OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

The City forms the first Technology Advisory Committee.

Philadelphia, August 22, 2011- Mayor Michael A. Nutter signed an executive order to establish the Office of Innovation and Technology (IT). This Office, which will replace the Division of Technology, will oversee the City’s technology infrastructure and services. The executive order also established the Technology Advisory Committee, an advisory committee chaired by the Managing Director, which will prioritize the implementation of proposed technology investments and service upgrades, identify best practices and provide counsel to IT. Last week, Mayor Nutter appointed Adel Ebeid as the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO).

“Technology impacts every part of our 21st century lives; therefore, it is critical that the City of Philadelphia have a department with the flexibility and the mission to respond to our technology and communications infrastructure needs,” said Mayor Nutter. “I am delighted that Adel Ebeid will head the new Office of Innovation and Technology. This department, under the leadership of the Technology Advisory Committee, will better help us to respond to the needs of Philadelphians in an effective and responsive way.”

“Adel proved in New Jersey that he possessed the technical skills, the management style and the leadership ability to create an effective information and technology system,” said Managing Director Richard Negrin. “I’m confident he’ll bring those same characteristics to Philadelphia to our organization’s transformation.”

CIO Adel Ebeid said, “I am honored to serve Philadelphia as the first Chief Innovation Officer. I look forward to working with the excellent team at the new Office of Innovation and Technology to bring further technology advancement and efficiencies to the City. We hope to make working with the City easier for all residents by improving our information technology systems and creating an excellent customer service experience for everyone.”

The Technology Advisory Committee is composed of senior Administration officials from City departments. The Executive Order also establishes the new position of the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) who will oversee IT, provide a leadership role in the Department, will develop and manage strategy, implementation, and day-to-day operations of all technology and information services. The CIO reports to the Managing Director.
