Announces video competition for Philadelphia businesses.
Philadelphia, August 30, 2011- Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced a series of citywide economic development events throughout the city demonstrating the City’s commitment to job creation, business retention and expansion, and new innovations for the public sector to connect with businesses in the 21st century. During the month of September, multiple economic development events will be held, focusing on the City’s sustained investment in Philadelphia’s businesses. During the first week, these events will include: the progress of Philly Live!, an entertainment, retail and dining development under construction on the former site of the Spectrum; the groundbreaking for a corporate headquarters; and the development of a significant new healthcare facility.
“Although we continue to face uncertain economic times, Philadelphia is attracting new companies, retaining our valued private sector partners and making it easier to do business in our city,” said Mayor Nutter. “Philadelphia is a smart city and a smart choice for jobs because we have the advantages of a centralized transportation system, a well-educated and skilled workforce, and a dynamic downtown, which ensures our city will continue to grow and thrive.”
On Wednesday, the City will hold its third PhillyStat Outcomes meeting highlighting its third strategic goal: Philadelphia is a place of choice to live, work or visit. This high level review will emphasize the City’s role to create a climate that supports entrepreneurship and the creation, growth or relocation of businesses in Philadelphia.
“PhillyStat is an opportunity to evaluate what the City is doing well and where we need to improve,” Mayor Nutter added. “Ensuring Philadelphia as a place of choice for businesses is a key component of our overall goals for the city. During the 2010 Census, our city grew in size for the first time in 60 years. This reinforces a trend that Philadelphians already know—Philadelphia is a place where people want to be. We will continue to make investments in businesses that bring new jobs and improve the quality of life for our citizens.”
The Mayor also announced a video contest and invited Philadelphia businesses to participate. From August 30th through September 22nd, the City will be encouraging Philadelphia businesses of all sizes and sectors to submit a 30-second video answering the question “Philadelphia is a Smart City and a Smart Choice for my business because…” The videos should be posted on Youtube.com and the videos can be submitted at www.phila.gov/smartchoice.
On September 30th, the Mayor will announce the winners of the video contest. The winning businesses will receive a visit by Mayor Nutter and will be highlighted on the City’s Business Services Portal and City’s Facebook page.
During the announcement, several sample videos were shown as examples. The companies that created videos were GlaxoSmithKline, SaVa, Electronic Ink, Arora Engineers, Materials Processing Corporation, Revolution Recovery, Olaya Studio Arquitectura and Nest.
