Mayor Nutter Celebrates Phillyrising Week

August 12, 2013 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter will celebrate the PhillyRising Collaborative during the week of August 12th by attending a number of events in PhillyRising neighborhoods throughout the City. Events include a meeting with youth ambassadors, a tot-lot cleanup and the PhillyRising Conference.
“PhillyRising is an important tool for the City in reducing crime, building capacity for change in communities and improving quality of life for residents,” said Mayor Nutter. “I’m excited to spend time this coming week visiting PhillyRising neighborhoods and talking with residents. It’s important to recognize the work that PhillyRising does as well as the work of the many organizations and individuals who partner with the City to make Philadelphia  safer, cleaner and greener.”
PhillyRising is hosting its first annual conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. There, conference participants will take part in workshops and hear presentations on improving quality of life for residents. Topics will include building community gardens, establishing resident groups, engaging youth in programs and developing career guidance workshops. Registration for the conference will be open until it reaches capacity. Please visit the following website to register:
Richard Negrin, Managing Director and Deputy Mayor for Administration and Coordination, said, “In a first of its kind effort, the City and Philadelphia citizens have partnered together to usher in a new era of citizen engagement. Together, we have improved quality of life in fifteen of the most challenged neighborhoods across the city. During that time, we have identified outstanding community heroes who have championed transformative positive change in their neighborhoods, and I am proud to honor their accomplishments.”
Throughout Philadelphia, PhillyRising targets neighborhoods that are plagued by chronic crime and quality of life concerns, and establishes partnerships with community members to address these issues. The PhillyRising Team coordinates the actions of City agencies to help neighbors realize their visions for their communities through sustainable, responsive, and cost-effective solutions.
“The PhillyRising Team has had the great pleasure to work across the city and partner with residents in some of our most challenged neighborhoods,” said John Farrell, Director of the PhillyRising Collaborative.  “We have seen great progress in many of those areas, and we are excited to share our lessons learned with residents from across Philadelphia.”
