Mayor Nutter, Philadelphia Delegation Depart for Trade Mission to the UK and Israel

Philadelphia, November 1, 2013 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter departs this evening for a 10-day trade mission to the United Kingdom and Israel designed to promote Philadelphia, attract investment, and create trade opportunities for Philadelphia businesses joining the mission.  During the visit Mayor Nutter and Alan Greenberger, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, will meet with a range of companies interested in establishing a presence in Philadelphia.  The Philadelphia delegation arrives in London on Saturday, November 2nd, travels to Tel Aviv in Israel on Wednesday, November 6th, returning to Philadelphia early morning on Tuesday, November 12th.


“In a competitive global environment cities cannot afford to sit back and wait for companies and investment to find them,” said Mayor Nutter.  “Mayors must be aggressive in going out and finding opportunities, championing their cities, and that’s exactly what I intend to do in the United Kingdom and Israel.  I am particularly excited about the opportunities created for the Philadelphia companies that are part of this delegation.”


The City of Philadelphia has created a blog so that residents can track the progress of the trade mission at  In addition, tweets from the United Kingdom and Israel will include the hashtags #PHLinUK and #PHLinISRAEL respectively so that Philadelphians can follow the mission on Twitter.


Highlights of the United Kingdom leg of the trip include:


  • Attending the World Travel Market with PHLCVB to promote tourism in Philadelphia;
  • Touring London’s Tech City, a technology hub in East London, to learn about how cities can best support startups and entrepreneurs;
  • Speaking to a reception hosted by UK Trade and Investment for the Philadelphia delegation. At the reception, more than 200 UK companies interested in doing business in the U.S. will be in attendance;
  • Visiting London’s Olympic site to meet with London 2012 officials and discuss what it takes to bid for, plan, and implement an Olympic Games;
  • Meeting with His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex;
  • Unveiling a plaque at William Penn’s gravesite, Jordans Meeting House in Buckinghamshire;
  • Making significant announcements with the Mark Group and the Philadelphia Orchestra among others.


Highlights of the Israel leg of the trip include:

  • Meeting with leading political officials including Israeli President Shimon Peres, Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat, Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo Ron Huldai, and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro;
  • Participating in a partnership announcement with CHOP, Drexel University and Hebrew University;
  • Meeting with leading figures from Israel’s venture capital, healthcare and life sciences communities to promote investment in Philadelphia and partnerships with Philadelphia institutions;
  • Visiting a range of startup incubators and entrepreneurs in Tel Aviv, one of the world’s leading startup hubs; and
  • Touring important cultural and heritage sites in Jerusalem and Bethlehem;

This trade mission was made possible by the support of a number of partners including the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, UK Trade and Investment, the Consulate-General of Israel, Select Greater Philadelphia, the International Visitors Council, the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia, Drexel University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Philadelphia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Comcast, Philadelphia Orchestra US Airways, British Airways, the United States Commercial Service, PHLCVB, Philadelphia International Airport, The Mark Group, Aberdeen Asset Management, London and Partners, Aecom, Pitango Venture Capital, Artisan Mobile, the British American Business Council, the Honorary British Consul, the Philadelphia Union, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Greenberg Traurig.

Costs for City of Philadelphia officials will be covered by Select Greater Philadelphia.
