Mayor Nutter Issues Statement Regarding US Airways, American Airlines Merger

November 12, 2013 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter released a statement regarding the settlement among the Department of Justice, state attorneys general, US Airways Group and American Airlines parent, AMR Corporation. On Oct. 23, 2013, seven mayors—Philadelphia Mayor Nutter, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, Charlotte Mayor Patsy Kinsey and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez—sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in support of the proposed merger. During the just concluded trade mission to the United Kingdom and Israel, Mayor Nutter, Deputy Mayors Alan Greenberger and Rina Cutler, and City Representative Desiree Peterkin-Bell met with representatives of US Airways in Tel Aviv to discuss the status of the merger along with other airport-related issues.

The Mayor’s statement follows:

“I applaud Attorney General Holder, Attorney General Kane and the management of US Airways and American Airlines for reaching a settlement that protects the interests of Pennsylvanians and allows the merger to advance. I have long believed that combining US Airways and American Airlines would benefit Philadelphia, Southeastern Pennsylvania and the entire tri-state region. As six other mayors and I noted in a letter to Attorney General Holder in late October, the merger of the airlines creates a better network than either carrier could build on its own. This will bring more businesses and international travelers and additional service to the region. With Philadelphia as a proposed hub for the new airline, I look forward to seeing growth in air service, employment and investment at Philadelphia International Airport as a result of the merger.”
