Story Bellows, Director of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, was recognized by Government Technology magazine as a Top 25 “Doers, Dreamers and Drivers”, an annual award that honors leaders who exemplify the transformative use of technology that is improving the way government does business and serves its citizens. Government Technology cited Ms. Bellows’ innovative voice in government while working with the FastFWD program as a reason for her receiving this award.
“As Mayor, it is very satisfying to see our public servants recognized for their commitment to the citizens of Philadelphia. Story has been a vital force behind our Administration’s push to be innovative and creative in finding solutions to long-standing challenges. Throughout her time in New Urban Mechanics, Story has helped develop models that have significantly impacted our city and have been replicated in cities across the country and around the world,” said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. “I want to congratulate Story on this much-deserved recognition of her talents and contributions.”
In December 2012, Mayor Nutter created the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, which serves as an internal innovation hub, connecting City departments and agencies with outside entities to create, support or pilot small-scale projects to work towards solutions for civic problems.
“I am honored to receive this recognition on behalf of all the individuals and organizations – both inside and outside government – with whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating and who are committed to ensuring Philadelphia as a city embracing innovative approaches to addressing civic challenges,” said Bellows.
Over the her tenure, Ms. Bellows implemented the FastFWD program, which offers startups rare access to city staff and government data in order to develop solutions that can meet a real need in local government and can scale up for broader implementation here and in other cities facing similar challenges.
Mayor Nutter and Chief Innovation Officer of Philadelphia Adel Ebeid were also honored by Government Technology as “Doers, Dreamers and Drivers” in 2014.
