Philadelphia, June 5, 2015 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter kicked off the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic presented by Parx Casino and Live! Hotel and Casino, which will feature both a men’s race and a women’s UCI Road World Cup event, that returns to Philadelphia for the first time in fourteen years. Adding the World Cup classification attracts the most elite women cyclists competing from around the globe. The Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, in the past known as the Philly Bike Race, is the largest international event in the City of Philadelphia and is expected to attract hundreds of professional cyclists from thirty-six countries to the city.
“Philadelphia is known as a sports city, and we’re increasingly gaining the reputation as a cycling city for professionals and amateurs alike,” said Mayor Nutter. “This year’s Philadelphia International Cycling Classic is part of the Women’s World Cup, and the men’s and women’s Classic races will offer equal prize money to the winners – a rare thing in professional cycling. I invite Philadelphians and cycling enthusiasts from all over to join me this Sunday to cheer these elite athletes.”
The races will begin Sunday, June 7th with the Men’s UCI America Tour lining up at the top of the Manayunk Wall, the most historic climb in U.S. cycling history. Two-time winner Kiel Reijnen of UnitedHealthCare is back, and looking to be the first with 3 consecutive wins in Philadelphia. Robin Carpenter of Hincapie Racing Team will not make it easy for Reijnen, having had his eye on this race since childhood, growing up in Manyunk and getting his start racing in the City of Philadelphia.
Both races will livestream on 8 websites around the world, including Germany, Australia, Canada, and the United States, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Additionally, Eurosport will air the Women’s Road World Cup race multiple times following the event. A full schedule and links to the livestream will be available on the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic website.
While the races loop through Manayunk, Roxborough, Lemon Hill and East Falls, spectators will enjoytraveling entertainment along the course between laps, including music by Worldtown Soundsystem, magic by Peter Pitchford Magic By Manipulation, juggling and stilt walking by Dick Rainer Entertainment, and accordion playing by John Collins.
Marc Oppenheimer from Parx Casino said, “Greenwood Gaming and Parx Casino are proud to continue our relationship with the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. We look forward to our third year as the Presenting Sponsor. And this year, we’re happy to bring on board our business partner in the future Philadelphia casino project, Cordish Companies and Live! Hotel and Casino.”
