Philadelphia, June 18, 2015 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter issued the following statement regarding the state funding formula recommendation released by the Basic Education Funding Commission:
“I applaud the work of the Basic Education Funding Commission and thank co-chairs Senator Pat Browne and Representative Mike Vereb who, with the members, have squarely addressed one of the most important public policy issues facing our Commonwealth – the fair funding of public education.
I commend the Commission for creating a balanced and equitable method for allocating the state’s basic education funds. I urge the General Assembly to enact this formula as recommended for the FY17 budget and approve Governor Wolf’s education budget proposal that moves toward full funding by restoring for the coming year the devastating funding cuts of the past four years for school districts across the state.
For Philadelphia, it will mean $159 million in restored funding that will strengthen the education of our city’s public school students.”
