The Office of the Inspector General has saved or recovered more than $70 million since 2008

Philadelphia, December 17, 2015 — The City of Philadelphia released The Road to Reform in Philadelphia, an eight-year progress report summarizing the accomplishments and work of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and its progress in promoting accountability and integrity in Philadelphia City government.

“During my Administration, the Office of the Inspector General has played a critical role in helping us maintain the highest standards in City government and how we do business.  The OIG works every day to ensure that our government is ethical and operates with integrity,” said Mayor Michael A. Nutter.  “I’m proud of the work that the OIG has done under the leadership of Amy Kurland.  But accomplishments can’t be measured by numbers alone.  The OIG has enhanced the public’s confidence and trust in City government.”

Report highlights include:

  • $70,915,790 in savings and recovery;
  • 328 administrative actions taken; and
  • 89 criminals charged.

In the report, Inspector General Amy L. Kurland concludes that Mayor Michael Nutter’s outspoken support for the Office of the Inspector General has been critical to the OIG’s success, and that City government has dramatically improved because of the Nutter administration’s institutional commitment to reform.

“Philadelphia is a more ethical, transparent and accountable City than it ever has been—a major milestone for a government once considered to be hopelessly corrupt,” Kurland writes in the report. “All of this was possible because of Mayor Nutter’s unwavering commitment to public integrity. The culture that he instilled in City Hall laid the groundwork for City employees to come forward with serious allegations of fraud and misconduct, without the fear or threat of retaliation.”

The report is available on the OIG’s website.  Read the report here:
